At Royal Chess Mall, every new addition serves a purpose. Sometimes, it means exploring a different artistic interpretation of a familiar design. At other times, it means revisiting an existing product and making it suitable for a different purpose.
This October, we introduced two products, each shaped by a different design direction.
- The Sovereign Crown Staunton Chess Set brings a distinctive sculptural identity to traditional wooden chess pieces, with particular attention to the Queen and Knight.
- Our new, smaller All-in-One Leatherette Chess Set Storage Case adapts the existing storage concept for compact chessboard-and-piece combinations, featuring an integrated carrying handle.
Together, these launches reflect our approach to combining thoughtful design with practical functionality.
Sovereign Crown: A Distinctive Take on Staunton Design
Royal Chess Mall already offers a wide range of Staunton-inspired chess pieces, from understated playing sets to more elaborate collector-oriented designs.
So what gives another interpretation its own place in the collection?
For Sovereign Crown, the answer lies primarily in the character of the Queen and Knight.
The Queen Takes Centre Stage
Most Staunton-inspired sets use a crown or coronet to distinguish the Queen. Sovereign Crown gives this familiar feature a considerably greater visual prominence.
A sculptural crown establishes the Queen’s royal character while preserving the recognisable form of a traditional Staunton chess piece.
The Knight introduces different kinds of detail. Its defined mane, expressive facial carving, and sculpted profile create a sense of movement, contrasting with the Queen's more formal appearance.
Together, these two chessmen establish the collection's visual identity.
The remaining pieces retain familiar Staunton-inspired forms, allowing the defining carvings to stand out without overwhelming the overall design.
Materials, Weighting and Board Compatibility
Sovereign Crown is carved from Rosewood and boxwood, features a 4.3-inch King, triple-weighted construction, and includes 34 chess pieces.
With an approximately 49 mm King base, the collection is recommended for chessboards with 60-65 mm squares.
The result is an option for chess enthusiasts who appreciate traditional Staunton proportions but want a more expressive design, particularly in the Queen and Knight.
A Smaller All-in-One Storage Case
The second addition addresses a different aspect of owning a chess set: storage.
Traditionally, wooden chessboards and pieces require separate storage. The board may have its own protective bag, while the pieces are kept in a separate box or case.
This offers flexibility, especially for players who regularly change their board-and-piece combinations.
However, for a chessboard and set of pieces that are normally used together, storing both components in one dedicated case can be more convenient.
Designed for Smaller Chess Sets
Royal Chess Mall's original all-in-one leatherette case was designed for 18-21-inch chessboards and larger chess pieces with King heights of approximately 4-4.6 inches.
Our new, smaller version extends the same storage concept to 15-17-inch chessboards and compatible smaller pieces. It provides a structured storage arrangement for the complete set.
An Integrated Handle and Secure Closures
The new, smaller case introduces an integrated carrying handle, secure buckle-style closures, and an updated leatherette configuration.
These additions extend the case's usefulness beyond keeping the board and pieces organised in one place. The handle makes it practical to move the complete storage case as a single unit.
However, this is not a lightweight travel solution. At approximately 5.3 kg before adding the chessboard and pieces, the case is more suitable for organised storage and occasional carrying than frequent lightweight travel.
It is also important to check the board's complete external measurements and the dimensions of the pieces to ensure a suitable fit.
Two Launches, Two Different Design Priorities
Sovereign Crown and the smaller all-in-one storage case serve two different needs: a unique chessmen design and a practical storage solution.
Sovereign Crown adds character to the familiar Staunton design with Queen and Knight carvings.
The smaller storage case focuses on extending an existing concept to smaller chess sets with added carrying convenience.
Each product gives chess enthusiasts a new option within its respective collection.
