Bundesform or the Federal Form Chess Pieces emerged as an alternative to the widely used Staunton chess pieces in the 1930s in Germany.
They became popular for use in the Munich Chess Olympics of 1936 and subsequently found their use in chess tournaments.
They were particularly appreciated for their simple design, durability, and affordability.
