The original Dubrovnik Set was made in the fifties and sixties in the renowned master carver Jakopović's workshop. These are the pieces that Bobby Fischer proclaimed his favourite, this is the chess set that we can see him analyze with in various documentaries and photographs. He famously said ," I think it's the best chess set I've ever played on. It's just a joy to play with, a joy to hold, the definition of the pieces, the design, … it's just a marvelous set, but it's very hard to get, I don't have it."

Getting an original Jakopovic's set is almost impossible. Price of some of these sets which are in playworthy condition can run in excess of hundreds of thousands of dollars and possibly more.

We have bought to life a precise reproduction of the original Dubrovnik with increased ballast at the base. The dark side army has been antiqued stained to replicate the appearance of vintage chessmen.
The Dubrovnik with its fat, chunky bases and a solid well proportioned design is a crown jewel for any chess player or collector.
Update: After feedback received from many chess collectors and players from the chess community, we have made revisions to the rook which has now a straight body and shank as compared to the tapered variant which was sold earlier.

Awesome…Awesome…Awesome!

This 1950’s Dubrovnik reproduction is incredible and an almost exact representation of the original 1950’s set. I feel this is one of the absolute best reproductions available and at a great price. You can thank YouTube’s “Random Chess Talk” for leading me to your store! :)

I purchased the mahogany-stained set and it looks so much like the original I was smiling from ear-to-ear for just about every piece as I unpacked! The buffing gives the pieces such a soft, satin glow and the overall craftsmanship is just beautiful. With a few nuanced differences, the Knight is very well done and bold. I appreciate the deference that Royal Chess Mall made to the chess community in changing the design of the Rook to better reflect the look of the 1950’s rook.

Not to overstate it, but these pieces are beautiful, honoring of the 1950’s version, and makes me proud to own a respectful reproduction of a piece of 20th century chess history.

1950 Dubrovnik / antiqued

These are exactely the pieces i wanted to have. In shape and look they are coming the nearest to the originals or better to what nowadays pieces should look like by copying " The Dubrovnik 1950" . The originals have been smaller, yes, these are a little larger, thats good. The originals were unweighted, these pieces are, thats good, too. So overall, this is the best chess set i personally could imagine to have. And the antiqued boxwood color is, what i was looking for and it's what make it at least 30% more beautiful than natural boxwood.
